Fairfield residents may see trash rate hike

Fairfield City Council is considering a new five-year deal with Rumpke, but it would come with an increase.

Rumpke, the city’s current trash collector and recycler, was the only solid waste collection company to bid on the city contract.

Single-family homeowners pay $12.25 per month under the current city contract with Rumpke, and multi-family owners pay $7.10 a month for Dumpster service.

Under the new contract, which would start on Sept. 1, 2017, if approved, rates would increase to $12.35 per month for single-family owners and drop to $7 per month for multi-family owners.

Annual increases would continue until single-family homeowners would pay $1.04 more per month in the final year of the contract. Multi-family owners would pay $0.58 more per month in the final year of the contract.

The bid submitted did include an additional five-year period, but city staff will review the option to either extend the contract with Rumpke or re-bid it.

It’s expected council won’t vote on the contract until its July meeting.
