Fairfield parade opens Miracle League season

Fairfield residents lined the route today for the Opening Day parade of the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League.

The parade will be led by two grand marshals — NFL Hall of Famer and former Bengal Anthony Muñoz and Local 12 anchor Sheila Gray, stepped off at 10 a.m. and marched through the city to the Miracle League for the start of the 2017 season.

Miracle League games are played on Friday nights for adults and Saturday mornings for youth with disabilities.

The Miracle League’s adult softball league is administered by the Therapeutic Recreation for the Disabled Softball League. And the Saturday youth league is put on by the Great Miami Valley YMCA.

Stephanie Schaeter stood with her parents on Mississippi Drive as the parade passed.

“We thought it was important to come out and support the kids,” she said.

Kurt Schaeter held Moses, a giant Newfoundland dog, who was a hit with those in the parade and paradegoes.

“It was just fantastic, great to see,” Kurt Schaeter said. All agreed it should be an annual event.

Kim Nuxhall, board chairman of the league that gives people with disabilities the chance to play baseball, said last week “Having been in the Findlay Market Parade for the past 10 years, I thought about giving that experience to these kids.”

He is the son of the late Reds Hall of Famer Joe Nuxhall.

Mike’s Car Wash sponsored the parade and will be partnering to help with other projects, such as the Joe Nuxhall Golf Outing.
