Driver describes finding child, 2, in busy Middletown road

A Hamilton woman believes it was “a God thing” that put her at the corner of Baltimore Street and Lafayette Avenue in Middletown on Tuesday morning.

While driving to work at the Community Pregnancy Center, Shea Redmon, 25, said she looked to her right and saw a toddler standing in the middle of busy Baltimore Street.

While Redmon said other motorists passed the girl, who appeared to be about 2 years old, she pulled her car over, near the intersection.

She ran toward the girl in hopes of saving her from possibly being run over at the busy intersection.

“God had me there for a reason,” she said.

Redmon walked over and picked up the girl.

“She was as friendly as can be,” Redmon told the Journal-News.

When Redmon asked the child, ‘Will you come see me?’ she said the girl “just put her arms up.”

“I said, ‘What’s your name and she said, Minnie Mouse,’” Redmon said.

When asked why she didn’t keep driving like the other motorists, Redmon said: “There is no way in the world I could. How could you? She has a purpose. She’s just precious.”

Redmon said she was reluctant to take the child to nearby homes because of a recent incident in Middletown when a 5-year-old boy walked away after he found his parents overdosed on heroin. When police responded to that home, they found both parents unconscious and a 3-month-old crying in a car seat.

After calling police, Redmon notified Candice Keller, a state representative who is also executive director of the Community Pregnancy Center in Middletown.

Keller drove to the scene and stood by until police arrived.

“It’s very, very disturbing,” Keller told the Journal-News.

Redmon said the girl was barefoot and her diaper was dry.

About 20 minutes after the girl was located, a woman, who lives in the 2100 block of Baltimore Street, came out of her house and told Redmon she was watching the girl for a friend. She said the girl lives with her parents in Cincinnati.

Middletown police arrived and interviewed Redmon and the woman who was watching the child.

Police have not yet said if the woman will face child endangering charges.
