Champion crowned, literacy programs funded at spelling bee

Emery Oleo Chemicals prevailed as the winning team Friday afternoon at the Altrusa Club of Hamilton’s seventh annual spelling bee.

This year’s event — named “Literacy Awakens” — will help fund grants for literacy-based programs in the Butler County area. Since 2009, Altrusa of Hamilton has been able to provide more than $16,000 in funding for local literacy based grants.

Seven teams made up of three people made their way through three rounds of words including: Chihuahua, narcissism, denouement, unconscionable, hieroglyphic, intransigent, and bludgeon.

The team from Emery was matched up with the Kiwanis Club of Oxford in the finals. After unconscionable was misspelled by Oxford, Emery spelled it correctly and then got bludgeon correct to take the title. Miami University Hamilton was last year’s winner.

Mayor Patrick Moeller praised the Altrusa organization for stepping up and helping to bring awareness and answers to literacy in the area.

“Altrusa for seven years through the Literacy Buzz has been a leader in improving the lives of adults by assisting them to improve their literacy,” Moeller said. “If you educate a parent, you educate a child being raised by that parent. The educational dividends of Altrusa’s efforts spread across generations. The city thanks Altrusa for their leadership and successes.”

To add to the fun on Friday, after a misspelled word — the Stinger Bee (AKA Kathy Downs) — would pop a balloon attached to one of the chairs from the team that made the blunder.

Sue Katz, one of the event’s co-chairs, said the spelling bee “was very successful,” and that “people from around the area have been very generous with donations to help the cause.”
