Boston Marathon bombing survivor to share story at Butler County event

The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty will host the first of what will be an annual speaker series, Leadership Through Philanthropy, on Thursday, June 8.

Heather Abbott, survivor of the 2013 Boston Marathon attack, is scheduled to headline the evening as keynote speaker.

Abbot was one of 17 people who lost at least one limb in the April 15, 2013, bombing. Since then, her foundation has given other amputees customized prosthetics that weren’t covered by insurance.

Also, the Foundation will present the findings of the recent Community Needs Assessment and award the Patricia F. Alderson Philanthropist of the Year Award to local philanthropists Bill and Jenny McCloy.

The theme of the event is intended to highlight the impact of philanthropy, bringing it to the forefront of community dialogue, organizers said.

“We are excited to celebrate charitable giving with Leadership Through Philanthropy,” said Community Foundation president and CEO Erin Clemons. “Our hope is that the event will be inspirational, and generate discussion about how local philanthropy can make a positive impact in West Chester and Liberty Twp.”

The event will take place at the Holiday Inn Centre Park in West Chester Twp.
