Another chance to see ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ author in Butler County

Local residents have another opportunity to see Middletown native J.D. Vance as he talks about the journey that inspired his bestselling book, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis."

Vance’s talk — “J.D. Vance: From Middletown to Yale to Scholar of Hillbilly Culture” — will take place at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Pavilion C of Miami University’s Armstrong Student Center.

The talk is free and open to the public.

A Middletown High School graduate, Vance grew up in Middletown and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Ky., before enlisting in the Marine Corps and serving in Iraq.

A graduate of the Ohio State University and Yale Law School, his book topped the New York Times Bestseller list earlier this year and is currently in its 14th week in the top 10 best-selling non-fiction books in America.

Many political experts have said Vance’s memoir gives insight into the appeal of President-elect Donald Trump to the struggling white working-class.

Vance’s talk will be followed by a book signing, with books available for sale at the lecture, according to event organizers.
