Winter driving: Tips to help you hit the road safely

Snow and ice are an inevitable part of winter in the Miami Valley. While snow can be beautiful to watch from the warmth and safety of your home, it isn’t always so enjoyable while you’re on the road.

AAA is encouraging drivers to be prepared when it comes to driving in winter weather conditions and released the following driving tips to help get you home safe this winter:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Don't try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a red light.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  • Do not mix radial tires with other tire types.
  • Remember the "Move over" law.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-ups.
  • Don't use cruise control while driving on any slippery surface, such as ice, sand or wet roads.
  • Avoid stopping if possible. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
  • Always look and steer where you want to go.
  • Keep an emergency kit in the car filled with a fully charged cellphone and charger, snow/ice scraper, blanket, extra gloves and hats, flares or brightly colored hazard triangle, shovel, de-icer, kitty litter or sand, water and non-perishable snacks.
  • Avoid using your parking brake when possible.
  • Don't power up or stop while going up hills. Try to get some momentum going before you reach the hill and let it carry you to the top. Go down hills as slow as possible.
  • Buckle up and use your seat belt every time.
  • Avoid driving while tired. Getting enough rest before taking on winter weather decreases driving risks.
  • Stay home if you possible. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can.
  • Check your AAA membership status.
