Miami University awards nearly 4,000 degrees

Miami University awarded nearly 4,000 degrees Saturday during a commencement ceremony that celebrated achievements and looked to the future.

Miami President Greg Crawford presided over the ceremony held at 1:30 p.m. at Yager Stadium at the university’s main campus in Oxford. Degrees awarded include 67 certificates, 109 associate’s, 3,463 bachelor’s, 294 master’s and 16 doctorates, according to the university.

The Class of 2017 includes six members of the Miami (Myaamia) Nation, which makes a total of 70 who earned a Miami degree when the first three students came to campus on a Heritage Award, which provides tuition waivers to members of the Myaamia Nation.

Miami’s own 2016 MacArthur Fellow Daryl Baldwin addressed the 2017 graduates. Baldwin is an adjunct assistant profession in education leadership who in September was awarded a “genius grant” as one of the 2016 MacArthur Fellows. He was among 23 people selected by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Baldwin is a leader in Native American language and cultural revitalization and is leading a revival of the language and culture of the Myaamia Nation, of which he is a member.
