Commentary: Will fans brave traffic at Ky. Speedway?

By Greg Billing

Staff Writer

You won’t find it on any racing schedule, but it could go down as one of the most watched road course events of the year: The traffic leading into Kentucky Speedway’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

NASCAR returns June 28-30 — highlighted by the Sprint Cup’s Quaker State 400 on June 30 — and bad feelings still linger for many fans stuck in traffic that backed up nearly 15 miles, only to be told to turn around and go home once they finally arrived at the track.

In an attempt to avoid a repeat of last year, Kentucky Speedway has spent nearly $10 million to add parking for another 20,000 vehicles on 170 acres. The state has spent about $3.7 million to expand roads leading to the track. A pedestrian walkway has also been constructed to aid race fans.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear toured the facility Monday and had this to say: “I believe with all the improvements the state has made and all the improvements in parking that the speedway has made, that whatever delays will be very reasonable that any NASCAR fan would expect when you are trying to get 100,000 people into one place on race day.”

Here’s what I want to know:Are the improvements in time for area race fans to give NASCAR another shot at Kentucky or was last year too much to risk it again this year?
