Gift givers seeking unique presents to give this holiday season would do well to check out the 11th annual Museum Holiday Shop Around.

To be held on Nov. 10 at the Marie S. Aull Education Center, the Shop Around is a community effort that lets shoppers go to one place to browse items from 16 area museums, galleries, historical societies and other organizations.

“That first event we thought maybe 500 people would come, but we were overwhelmed with the response,” said Aullwood development and marketing coordinator Ardith Hamilton. “The organizations that were here had to go back around mid-morning and grab more inventory.”

Here’s a partial summary of what will be available:

Aullwood Audubon

For adults: Baskets of Cambodia that are fair-trade purses, a collection of T-shirts and sweatshirts, owl stepping stones, mugs, bird-feeders, including fair trade feeders from Peru, Aullwood honey, and nature art by the late Charlie Harper.

For children: giddy-up horses, puzzles, and FindIt games.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

For adults: a mixture of scarves, jewelry and watches, amethyst tea light holders.

For children: rock, fossil/mineral specimans, crack-open geodes, magnet science kits, robots, astronomy items, planetarium kits, and stocking stuffers like “Grow your own Christmas Tree” kits.

Dayton Art Institute museum store

The DAI store has been participating in the Museum Shop Around off and on since the beginning. A variety of children’s toys, and a great new puzzle toy for kids and adults called Perplexus. Buddha Boards made in Canada will be available. It’s a white board on a stand where you paint with water, and the image slowly disappears as the water dries. It’s inspired by the Zen idea of living in the moment.

“Our children’s toys were very popular last year, and Christmas items do really well if it’s cold and feels Christmasy outside,” said Diane Haskell, 19-year manager of the museum store/facility rentals.

Dayton Visual Arts Center

Cards, sculpture, ornaments, glass, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, jewelry, wearables, ceramics, photography, fine art and fine crafts.

“We’ve been going to the Museum Shop Around off and on, and solidly for the past six years,” said DVAC director Eva Buttacavoli. “We love doing it. It’s our way to show off our wonderful Dayton artists.”

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

This is the first year that this organization will be involved. This booth will feature a variety of items, including puzzles, lunch pails, pilot leather jackets, puddle jumper toy, gliders, bomber jackets for kids, baby one-sies and an assortment of books for all ages.

SunWatch Indian Village

According to gift shop manager Janet Williams, she will have Lakota dance sticks, fair trade items like friendship bracelets made in Peru, and turquoise/beaded jewelry made by Mayan Indians in Guatemala, original American Indian artwork, cloth purses, coats, Navaho dolls, and wind chimes made in America.

Wright B Flyer Museum

Phil Chandler, who’s been managing the gift shop for the past year, said they will feature gift certificates, flight certification for Wright B Flyer rides, T-shirts, polo shirts, hats, visors, Wright Flyer models, Wright brothers DVDs and plastic die-casts of the Wright Flyer.

In addition to the above organizations, a Toys for Tots representative will also be receiving donations of toys that day. The cafe will have soup and sandwiches available for those who want to take a break.

“For me, this has been the official beginning of the holiday season,” said Judy Mott of North Dayton. “The vendors provide unique gifts that are not found anywhere else.”
