CINCINNATI —
After a week-long online contest that included more than 5,000 suggestions, the Cincinnati Zoo has named a baby giraffe born last week.
Lulu was the name selected by a public vote conducted via the zoo’s facebook web page. More than half of the voters chose that name over two others: Mara (Maasai for “spotted”) and Rosie to represent the Cincinnati Reds.
Lulu is Swahili for “precious,” according to zoo officials.
The giraffe was born Oct. 12 to Tessa, the mother; and Kimba, the father, which are both part of the Giraffe Ridge exhibit.
