Benefits of volunteerism for older adults

By Steve Schnabl

In the last decade, volunteerism has gained popularity in the older adult community faster than ever before. A growing number of baby boomers are looking to stay active and engaged long after exiting the workforce. Luckily, this is a trend that elicits many hidden health benefits. Volunteerism also connects to our CORE Wellness philosophy by engaging physical, social and spiritual wellness, helping you achieve your best quality of life.

Increase physical health

Physical health and volunteerism go hand in hand in many ways. Volunteering often requires a minimum degree of physical activity, whether it’s getting ready, driving to a location and performing light duties or clerical work. These basic functions can go a long way in reversing physical decline and increasing strength, flexibility and endurance. Many Prime club members take advantage of both volunteer opportunities and fitness classes at our three locations.

Connecting with others

Volunteerism opens up doors for social opportunity for many older adults. It’s a great way to meet other like-minded individuals interested in advocating in the community, working with children or teens, serving food, gardening, assisting with meals on wheels routes and more. Social wellness is such an important facet of volunteerism. Working with others to accomplish a goal establishes trust, camaraderie and an avenue for networking and sharing advice.

Making it a routine

One of the best cures for the winter blues or a sudden bout of melancholy is adding structure to your day. Those who have spent their lives in the workforce or raising children know that there can be beauty in a routine. A sense of social accountability can be the push you need to get out and discover new opportunities and rediscover yourself. Not to mention, volunteerism is a great cognitive stimulant, helping to stave off mental decline and memory loss.

Getting started

Partners in Prime has several volunteer opportunities at our three prime club locations. We also partner with Community Volunteer Force, a network connecting people from all over Butler County to opportunities and causes that are meaningful to them.
