Liberty Twp. trustees will pick fire levy option tonight

Liberty Twp. trustees have been mulling a fire levy ballot question for more than a year, and a final decision will be made tonight.

With explosive growth in the township — it has quadrupled in size over the past two decades to 40,000 people — the trustees have debated whether to wait on the levy to capture new growth that has continued to come or pull the trigger on a levy because reserves are dwindling. Hiring a new fire chief has also filtered into the timing issue.

The trustees have asked the county auditor’s office to provide collection amounts for 3.25, 3.50 and 3.75 mill levies and are poised to pick an option tonight. Their finance committee has recommended the 3.75 mill amount for the November ballot.

If voters approve that levy amount, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay an extra $131 annually.
