TRENTON — The Rev. George W. Klein, pastor of Holy Name Church, said serving as a priest provided him with many rewarding experiences throughout his career.

He once wrote, “Priesthood has been a truly enriching experience for me. Such opportunities would never have come to me outside the priesthood.”

Klein, pastor of Holy Name Church in Trenton since 1991, died Friday March 12. He was 81.

He was born on June 19, 1928 in Cincinnati.

Klein did his preparatory studies at St. Gregory Seminary, studied theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West, and was ordained on May 29, 1954 by then Archbishop Karl J. Alter, said Dan Andriacco, director of the office of communications for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

He received his first assignment on June 17, 1954, at the Church of the Annunciation in Cincinnati, he said.

Klein also served as assistant at St. Elizabeth Church in Norwood from 1955-57; St. James of the Valley Church in Wyoming from 1957-62; St. Ann Church in Hamilton from 1962-1963; St. Teresa of Avila Church in Cincinnati from 1963-69; and St. Saviour Church of Rossmoyne 1969-72.

Besides Holy Name Church, he served as pastor of the Church of the Transfiguration in West Milton from 1973-79, Andriacco said.

In 1989, Klein was appointed moderator and member of a team of priests at Holy Trinity, St. John and St. Mary churches in Middletown, he said.

At various times, he served as temporary administrator of St. Elizabeth Church in Norwood, St. James of the Valley Church in Wyoming and St. Saviour Church in Rossmoyne.

During his years at the ministry, Klein also was a part-time teacher at Seton High School in Cincinnati, Hamilton Catholic High School in Hamilton and Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Andriacco said.

Reception of the body will be held at 5 p.m. today, March 15, at Holy Name Church, 222 Hamilton Ave. with visitation until 8 p.m. at the church.

Daniel E. Pilarczyk, archbishop emeritus of Cincinnati, will preside at the mass service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Holy Name Church. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery.
