HAMILTON — Four students from Linden Elementary School showed the Hamilton Board of Education a book their school created to discuss good character at the board’s regular meeting Tuesday, March 9.

“We have two goals at Linden Elementary,” said Principal Chad Konklin. “First and foremost is to give our students the best education possible, but equally important is that we give them a solid foundation in character education.”

Jenna Ellington, Sam Gibson, Lauren Leedke and Sarah Wadman each read their essays and showed the drawings they made for the professionally bound volume, which Superintendent Janet Baker, who received a complimentary copy, said would make a nice keepsake for their families.

Baker also commented on Konklin’s work in bringing together teachers from all over the district to the new elementary school and quickly getting them to work as a team.

“This project is a good example of that,” she said.

In other business, the board approved the retirement of Kathleen Leist, assistant superintendent for human resources, April 1, and re-hired her in the same position effective April 2 and through July 31, 2001. Her current salary is $109,839 and her salary following the re-hire will be $106,756.

The board also approved bids for work involving the alterations and additions at Hamilton High School, including $898,744 for air-handling and electrical distribution equipment.

Jim Boerke, director of construction management, told the board that the purchase of equipment was slightly higher than estimated, but by purchasing the equipment in advance, the specifications for installation bids would be more precise and would save the district money in the long run.
