Role in lives of youths earns honor for Miller

Zellene Miller has a way of making students feel they can do anything.

Many line up outside the Hamilton High School career development coordinator’s office daily seeking direction, a friend, a mentor.

“Sometimes they don’t know what’s needed for their future. They don’t fully realize their dreams and their hopes,’’ Miller said. “I tell them they can do it. I’m an encourager, a supporter, even a cheerleader.’’

On Wednesday, May 27, Miller will be honored for her work with youths at the May Morning Breakfast as the 2009 YWCA Woman of the Year. The event will be hosted by Vickie Ryan, the wife of Mayor Don Ryan.

YWCA officials said the New Miami graduate exemplifies the mission of the Y and has made a difference in the lives of many Butler County residents.

“She touches so many lives of young people through her work and has contributed directly to the YWCA as a former board member and was selected to the academy of achieving women in 2000,’’ said YMCA President Sybil Miller.

Zellene Miller said she’s passionate about her job and about the students she helps.

She said mentors encouraged her as a youth and she wants to do the same.

“This is what the Lord placed me here to do — mentor,’’ said Zellene Miller. “In my mind, if I can make a difference in someone else’s life, that’s most important.’’
