HAMILTON — While the rest of America may be obsessing over the Super Bowl this week, students at Ridgeway Elementary have been focusing on Empty Bowls.
Fifth and sixth graders have been rolling out clay to make bowls by hand, and a few have even gotten to work on a pottery wheel borrowed from Hamilton High School in an effort to accumulate 300 hand-made vessels for Hamilton’s first Empty Bowls luncheon, slated for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.
At the luncheon, guests choose from amongst a collection of beautiful, handmade bowls created and donated by Ridgeway Elementary students, staff, and parents as well as local artists and potters, said art teacher Terry Haynes-Toney.
Fifteen PTO members volunteered to make soup to fill them, Toney said.
“They can keep their bowls to use or display at home and to serve as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world,” she said.
Homemade bread, desserts and beverages will also be served. Cost of the event is $10 per person of any age. Guests are also encouraged to bring canned goods to donate. Proceeds will be divided equally between the Shared Harvest Food Bank and Hamilton’s Open Door Pantry.
“We hope to have well over 300 people and plan to include student entertainment throughout the event as well,” said Principal Kathy Wagonfield. “This event nicely coincides with Random Acts of Kindness week (Feb. 13-19) and our district’s Fill That Bus campaign (Feb. 6-10).”
Toney first planned to organize a district-wide event for next fall, but students were so excited about it that she decided to give it a trial run at Ridgeway, make it an annual event and get other schools involved next year.
