HAMILTON — Downtown Hamilton turned into a sea of red, white and blue Sunday, July 4, as thousands gathered for food, music and plenty of fun at the city’s Independence Day festivities.
From A Taste of Hamilton at noon to a parade through town and the fireworks that filled the dark skies, there was something for everyone.
Dick Scheid and Patty Hubbard of the Lindenwald neighborhood watched the parade from High and Second streets. They wore red, white and blue headpieces that are traditional attire for the friends for one day every year.
“I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” Hubbard said, while snapping pictures of the parade participants who braved the “hotter than a firecracker” heat. “This a real old-fashioned parade. It’s wonderful.”
Most everyone found a treat with an array of eats offered, including pizza, hot dogs, funnel cakes, grilled sausage, icy drinks and ice cream, which was a favorite of Charlie, a two-month old shih-poo.
The tiny canine, which is a cross between a shih-tzu and a poodle, lapped up a cup of vanilla with no regard to the mess it made of its furry face.
Owner Ashley Lakes of Hamilton said it was the pup’s first parade, but she only had eyes for the frozen treat.
Perched in his stroller, young Keyton Rayburn used two hands to dip french fries into ketchup.
John DiLorenzo, Keyton’s grandfather, said the Fairfield residents were in attendance to “Honor America.”
The theme of this year’s festivities was “Proud to be an American.” The celebration was presented by the Hamilton Community Foundation, the Michael J. Colligan Fund and the 4th of July Committee.
