Repairs begin on 4 of 19 city streets

HAMILTON — Resurfacing work has started on one East Side and three West Side streets as the city uses a variety of funding sources to improve 19 streets.

Final paving is expected to be complete by the end of next week on portions of Haldimand, Cereal, Hunter and Parkamo avenues, said City Engineer Rich Engle.

Work on Cereal Avenue was delayed, in part, because crews have to repair gas leaks that were discovered, Engle said.

Streets that have been targeted for improvement have been prioritized based on a survey done by a consulting firm.

Cincinnati-based Barrett Paving was awarded the contract at around $2 million, to be paid with a mix of the City Street Fund, property assessments, and two grants — from the Ohio Public Works Commission and a Community Development Block Grant, according to city records.

Lora Bush, who lives next to the house in which she was born on Haldimand Avenue, said she remembers when there weren’t any sidewalks on her street.

She said she doesn’t mind paying the assessment now, about $60 to fix the sidewalk in front of her house.

“The street was in pretty bad shape,” the 87-year-old said. “It had a lot of cracks and holes in it before they started.”

The schedule isn’t certain when the next streets on the list will receive attention. Engle said it depends on when the contractor will be able to use a milling machine and when the subcontractor does the final paving.

Other streets that are targeted include portions of Hanover, 10th, Minster, South C and South F streets; Bishop, Ross, Kenworth, Corliss, Hooven, Edgewood, and Barbara avenues; Impala and Madeline places; and Mollie Drive.

City records indicate that the following streets will be resurfaced after the installation of sanitary sewers and a water main: Western, Harrison, Millville, McKinley and Brookwood avenues and Kingston Drive.

I still can't believe Hamilton had to hire an outside firm to tell them which streets to pave (and which to pave first). Good grieve! Give me a break! Are you all that dumb?? I'm sure a "regular city" worker could have told you that for free! That was a WASTE of good MONEY!
