Project aimed at clean sweep of city and river

HAMILTON — Volunteers will be hitting the streets and the banks of the river Saturday, May 2, to pick up trash and debris.

The Neighborhood Spring Clean Up and the Great Miami River Sweep, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., are two separate events that share a common goal — sending litter where it belongs — the dump.

Ralph Reigelsperger, Hamilton public works director, said $31,000 is budgeted for the city’s cleanup, but the final cost, depending on how much debris is collected, is expected to be lower. Last year, the clean up cost the city about $23,000.

Five different areas in Hamilton and nine different communities along the river will be targeted as part of the combined effort. Volunteers in Hamilton will be provided gloves, garbage bags and a T-shirt after signing in and being assigned an area to work.

In the North End, volunteers should meet at 250 N Ninth St.; 2nd Ward, at Second and Chestnut streets, 4th Ward, at 13th and Walnut streets; downtown, at Front and High streets; and in Lindenwald, meet at Heaven Sent, 2269 Pleasant Ave.

German village volunteers should meet at the Carriage House, 131 Village St., and for West Side residents, a Dumpster will be placed by Partners in Prime at Ross and B streets.

In addition to meeting places at parks in Madison Twp., Trenton, New Miami, Fairfield, Camp Campbell Gard and along the bike path in Middletown, the river sweep in Hamilton will start at Joyce Park, Combs Park and the dam at Neilan Boulevard.

The river sweep is sponsored, in part, by various Butler County agencies, including the soil and water conservation, solid waste and storm water districts.
