HAMILTON — Hamilton police dog Regret, a drug sniffing specialist, has traded the back seat of a cruiser for life as a full-time family pet after he retired from the department earlier this month.

Regret and his handler, Officer Terry Kiefer, have partnered for six years, detecting narcotics during numerous search warrants and car stops. Besides his “nosey duties,” Regret has been a favorite attraction at police tours and public demonstrations.

“The loss of Regret will be felt for quite a while, but the department is moving forward in an attempt to fill the void,” said Sgt. Michael Waldeck, canine coordinator. “We have already started our search for a new canine.”

The department is seeking a donation of a male Labrador retriever between the age of 1 and 2 to train as the department’s next drug dog, according to Sgt. Craig R. Bucheit, public affairs supervisor. Contact the public affairs section at (513) 868-5811, ext. 2007.

The Fraternal Order of Police has set up a fund and is seeking donations for the dog’s training. Bucheit said canine training can cost up to $10,000. Residents also may contact the Public Affairs section to make a donation.
