HAMILTON — About 100 Butler County dogs and cats should be less hungry this holiday season.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, volunteers from the Butler County Animal Friends Humane Society passed out free bags of dry dog and cat food to area residents.

The agency also handed out dog and cat food coupons.

Executive Director Meg Stephenson said during these uncertain economic times, sometimes family pets are forgotten. She hoped the giveaway provided pet owners a little financial assistance.

“The holidays can be rough for everybody,” she said. “Hopefully this will get people to the next paycheck.”

About 50 pet owners attended the giveaway at the new Butler County shelter, 1820 Princeton Road in Hamilton, which replaced the old shelter in Trenton.

James Smith and Billie Combs, of Hamilton, were thankful for their two bags of dog food.

“Right now,” Smith said, “every dime we save counts.”

Bob Cobb, of Hamilton, adopted a Great Dane from the shelter about six months ago. He returned Saturday to pick up some dog food. He called the donation “a big help, especially this time of year.”

Stephenson said the leftover dog and cat food at the shelter will be handed out from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, or until supplies run out.

Stephenson and volunteers also dropped off 50 bags — 100 pounds — of dog and cat food at Serve City, a homeless shelter and food pantry in Hamilton. That food will be distributed from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
