OXFORD — From the finesse of quilting to the rawness of paper art, a new fiber arts exhibit at the Oxford Community Arts Center has a lot to offer.

“We wanted a little bit of everything,” said Caroline Croswell, executive director of the arts center.

“We’ve done quilt shows before, and we wanted to do more than just quilts; we wanted to give just a taste of fiber arts.”

The Fiber Arts group exhibit, now open, features six different fiber artists.

Two quilters will have works on display alongside woven pieces, repurposed fibers and paper art, Croswell said.

“We were looking for people we knew were very good artists in a variety of styles,” Croswell said. “Fibers are used in lots of different ways.”

Certain aspects of fiber arts, such as repurposed pieces, are a newer trend, Croswell said.

“It’s gone from being something that was just sort of done as a craft to becoming more and more art,” she said.

Quilting, meanwhile, has been around for years, although art quilts branch out from the traditional techniques, Croswell said.

“Oftentimes, they’re not made from a pattern at all but made from free-cut pieces,” she said. “They’ll be odd shapes and brilliant bright colors, and they oftentimes depict a landscape or some sort of abstract scenery.”

For quilt artist Joyce Ponder, quilting goes beyond patterns.

“Making quilts is about discovering the artist within me and challenging myself to create beautiful objects that are visually exciting,” Ponder said.

Kathy Baxter’s paper art, meanwhile, is cut from a different cloth.

“It’s completely different; 180 degrees from the style and finesse of (quilting),” Croswell said. “It’s on the rough side. It’s on the simple side. It has a lot of impact.”

Other artists featured in the exhibit include Nelly Bly Cogan, Pamela Howard and Carol Burke.

The reception will include a book reading by self-care expert Gini Maddocks, Robert Mullinex’s “Treeline” exhibit and ballroom dancing from 8 to 10 p.m. A $5 fee is required for the open dancing event, but otherwise the event is free.

The artists also will be available for a meet-and-greet.

“These are people you would just want to get to know,” Croswell said. “It’s going to be a really nice, exciting night.”
