HAMILTON – City officials say two house fires in as many days were caused by children playing with matches and lighters.

Hamilton firefighters responded to a fire at 10:32 p.m. Monday at 63 Chestnut Drive. The fire was located in a bedroom and damages were estimated at $5,000, fire officials said. The fire started after children were using a lighter to ignite a mattress, fire officials said.

Fire crews headed out again this morning to 135 Franklin St. after a Hamilton police officer on patrol saw flames in the structure. Fire officials said the officer entered the burning structure and assisted the residents in getting out. The fire resulted in damages estimated at $5,000; it was caused by children playing with matches and igniting laundry on the basement floor, fire officials said.
