OXFORD — The Miami University Board of Trustees will hear a recommendation to increase the cost of room and board for the next academic year.
The recommended increase is 3.47 percent for students living in a residence hall with a roommate and on Miami’s meal plan. The bump is the lowest increase of recent years, according to David Creamer, Miami’s vice president of finance and business.
“We’ve kept the rate very modest. I think this is an important statement at a time when cost is very important to students,” Creamer said to the Board of Trustees’ subcommittee on finance, who approved the recommendation to go before the full board at its next meeting.
Cost of single rooms, housing during the summer, university apartments and sorority suites also is recommended to increase between 2.25 percent and 3.47 percent.
The increases will help the university deal with the rising cost of food and also provide money for future renovations to some residence halls, said Pete Miller, associate vice president for auxiliaries.
Those housing updates will include limited improvements to overflow spaces — typically basement space — used as temporary rooms for some students. The university also plans to modernize some bathrooms, Miller said.
Residence Hall Association officials have given their approval of the increase, Miller said.
Estimated costs for next year have Miami University below Bowling Green State University and Kent State in the cost of room and board at public universities in Ohio, according to information from Miami.
