LIBERTY TWP. — Miami University grad and Lakota Local Schools alum Eric Powell, 29, faced elimination Sunday on NBC’s “America’s Next Great Restaurant” television show.
Judges said his grilled cheese did not have enough cheese and seemed more like a panini. They said his concept for Meltworks, which has been three years in the making, has “plateaued.”
Still, with the promise to look into signature sauces and perfecting the cheese portions, Powell made it to the next round.
Seven contestants will continue the competition this week for the chance to own a fully-funded franchise. The competition has been airing since March 6, when Powell was at his mother’s Liberty Twp. home to view the first episode, alongside family and friends.
Win or lose, Powell’s goal is to open a chain of “grown-up grilled cheese” restaurants with his Lakota classmate and business partner, Trevor Snowden.
Powell, the son of Judge Stephen Powell of the 12th District Court of Appeals, step-son of Interim Superintendent Ron Spurlock and son of retired Lakota Principal Elizabeth Spurlock, will appear again on the show at 8 p.m. Sunday on NBC.
