CINCINNATI — While Hamilton City Councilman-elect Tim Naab prepares for his first term, his son Andrew, a junior at St. Xavier High School, has one-upped him by being elected mayor.
The younger Naab was elected Oct. 6 as the 2009-10 YMCA Cincinnati Youth Mayor at the YMCA Youth in City Government Conference.
The two-day conference in downtown Cincinnati is the beginning of a year-long program that immerses area high school students in hands-on, interactive exercises aimed at teaching them responsible citizenship.
Naab had attended the conference the previous year and was elected to the YMCA City Council, and this year decided to run for mayor, and was elected by 187 of his peers after delivering a speech in Cincinnati Council Chambers.
It’s more than just a symbolic honor, he said. He conducts meetings of the youth council for a year, but also is trying to get projects off the ground that will have lasting impact.
“I’m trying to implement ideas that our council can implement in the community so that next year’s program can build on it,” he said.
Currently, the youth council sponsors a community cleanup in the spring that Naab wants to expand to the fall and to get the neighborhoods involved in the effort.
“That way in a few years, it’s not just a council effort but a community effort,” he said.
Naab also serves as vice chairman of the Hamilton Youth Commission and attended the Ohio Youth in Government program in Columbus, where he wrote a bill and introduced legislation on the floor of the Ohio House of Representatives.
“We’re very proud of his accomplishments and passion for student government and community involvement and leadership, in both Hamilton and Cincinnati,” said Councilman-elect Tim Naab of his son.
