Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community plans 'Awareness' events

A pride parade, movie viewing, read-in and live music are planned.

OXFORD — A parade and rally this afternoon will kick off a week of events to highlight the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community at Miami University.

A pride parade and rally starts at 4 p.m. today, March 22, at the Uptown parks as part of LGBT Awareness Week. A picnic follows the parade and rally at the Fine Arts Plaza.

Events, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by many groups on campus, including the Miami’s office of GLBTQ Services, Spectrum and Haven.

Events include:

  • Film “Screaming Queens” with director, historian and activist Susan Stryker at 4 p.m. Tuesday, in 212 MacMillan Hall;
  • Safer Sex Olympics, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Hub;
  • Performance by Good Asian Drivers, a blend of pop, rock, folk and spoken word, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, in 102 Shideler Hall
  • Women’s Read-In, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, at the Instructional Materials Center at King Library
  • Keep it Queer: Discuss & Dance, 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday at Tonic, 45 E. High St.
  • Kinsey Sicks, “America’s Favorite Dragcapella Beautyshop Quartet,” drag performance 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday at the Shriver Center multipurpose rooms, part of After Dark.
