OXFORD — Longtime Oxford police Lt. Robert Holzworth has been selected as the city’s next chief of police.

Holzworth has been serving as interim chief since September 2011. He has worked for the department since 1973.

“I’ve been working for the quite a long time. I still love coming to work,” Holzworth told Oxford City Council Tuesday. “I will work hard for you, I promise you that. This is the place for me, the place for my family.”

City Manager Doug Elliott said Holzworth has served the police department in many capacities.

“He brings a wealth of law enforcement experience and knowledge to the position,” Elliott said.

“As chief, Bob will continue serving the division and the community he loves as the city’s top law enforcement officer,” Elliott said.

Holzworth was promoted to lieutenant in 1978. He served in that position until his retirement in January 2011. After retirement, he was appointed to the part-time position of assistant to the chief of police for parking and transportation in April 2011.

Holzworth is a graduate of Miami University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1973. He also has an associate degree in criminal justice from Miami Hamilton. He attended the FBI National Academy in 1989 and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville in 1995 where he received the “Dean’s Scholar” award.

Mayor Richard Keebler said Holzworth has the respect of the city officers and the community.

Holzworth said he has paid special attention to the chiefs he’s worked under and learned from them. He said Oxford has a great police department.

“I can tell you tonight the city is in good hands and we’re going to take good care of it,” Holzworth said.

“I can’t wait to go to work tomorrow,” he said.
