An employee impaled by a piece of wood at a Lebanon business this week is expected to recover, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration plans to investigate the incident that occurred Monday, June 22,

Emergency crews responded to American Wood Source, 139 Harmon Ave., at around 2 p.m. Monday to aid a 28-year-old man who was wounded by a piece of wood that pierced his chest and exited his back.

However, he is expected to recover, said Pat Kirk, an administrative assistant at the Lebanon Fire Department.

The man, whose name has not been released, was transported via medical helicopter to undergo surgery at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. He appeared to be conscious as emergency personnel loaded him onto the helicopter, according to Capt. Steve Oughterson of the LFD.

He remains in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Kirk said.

She said the man sustained the injury while operating a piece of machinery.

“That’s all I know right this minute,” she said Tuesday afternoon, June 23. “They (hospital officials) haven’t called us back.”

Calls to a manager at the business were not immediately returned.

The Cincinnati office of the OSHA plans to look into the issue, according to Barb Marcum, assistant area director.

This is the first time American Wood Source has been the subject of an OSHA investigation, Marcum said.

The family-owned and operated business opened on Harmon Avenue in October 2007, according to the company’s Web site. It specializes in mill-work, finishing, cabinet-making and sales, according to the company’s Web site.
