HAMILTON — Todd Troxell came on down — he was the next contestant on “The Price is Right.”

Troxell, a Hamilton resident, taped his appearance on the long-running CBS game show in December, and his show is scheduled to air at 11 a.m. Thursday Feb. 11.

To hear his friend Andy Devilliers of West Chester tell it, it would have been more surprising had Troxell not made his way to the contestants’ row.

“I’ve never seen somebody so determined to get on a game show in my life,” said Devilliers, who accompanied Troxell on his trip to CBS’ Television City in Los Angeles. The two were taking the trip as a “little adventure,” said Troxell, who was about to begin studying for the Medical College Admission Test.

How intent was Troxell? He went to the taping wearing a shirt that said “I need the Price is Right stimulus package” — and he ended up getting host Drew Carey to sign it.

For Troxell, it was all part of a game plan. One step was having that unusual shirt. A second was, “You have to be excited. There’s no level that’s too high,” he said.

Troxell certainly lived up to that. Every contestant is interviewed in an early screening. “I was literally jumping up and down during my interview. They asked me, ‘Are you cold?’ and I said ‘No, I’m excited. All I want is a chance to bid. I guarantee I’ll get on that stage,’ ” he said.

As confident as Troxell was, he still couldn’t quite believe it when he heard that immortal phrase “Come on down” — with his name in front of it.

“When I actually heard it being called, it was a surreal experience,” he remembered.

The shock subsided, though, and Troxell engaged his strategy of bidding just slightly differently from the other contestants to determine the price of a DirecTV satellite with two-year service. It worked, because the next thing he knew, he was bounding up on stage to play the game “Cliffhanger.”

He’s not at liberty to say how everything turned out, but Troxell does recommend trying to catch a taping of “The Price is Right” live — even if you just end up watching.

“It’s fun even if you don’t get called down, but oh, boy — when you do it’s a whole other monster,” Troxell said.
