HAMILTON — The Michael J. Colligan History Project of Miami University Hamilton and the Hamilton Community Foundation are accepting nominations for the 2010 Jim Blount History Educator Award.
The annual award is named for local historian, journalist and educator Jim Blount and “honors those who exemplify the commitment to history and the achievements in history education epitomized in Mr. Blount’s life and career,” said Bob Meckley, director of the Colligan History Project.
Blount has been researching local history for more than 55 years and has written more than a dozen books, Meckley said.
Two awards will be given, one to a history teacher in grades K-6 and one to a history teacher in grades 7-12.
All K-12 social studies/history teachers employed in Butler, Warren or Hamilton counties are eligible and encouraged to apply. Applications require letters of recommendation, statement of teaching philosophy and a portfolio offering evidence of teaching effectiveness.
The deadline for applications is April 16. Details can be downloaded from www.tinyurl.com/2010blountaward.
“Teachers who were previously nominated but didn’t win are encouraged to resubmit their portfolios if they were returned, or contact us to reactive their files if they did not ask for them back,” Meckley said. “In these cases there’s no need to create a whole new packet.”
Winners will receive public recognition at a dinner hosted in their honor on May 11, an engraved crystal sculpture, a citation and a $500 stipend.
Applications will be reviewed by a blue ribbon panel and winners will be announced in early May.
