HAMILTON — The Hamilton City School District has prepared for numerous changes in management by instituting new training programs.
In the past two years, more than 20 administrators have new positions or are retiring, said Superintendent Janet Baker.
“This could create a chaotic transition,” she said. “But we’ve already put into place a mentoring plan where newly hired administrators shadow those retiring while they’re still on the job.”
“This allows seasoned veterans to pass along their wisdom and expertise in a seamless manner while keeping our administrative costs the lowest in Butler Bounty,” Baker said.
For instance, Chad Konkle, currently principal at Linden Elementary, was promoted on Dec. 7 to replace Everett Mann, the district’s administrative assistant for business and planning. Mann will be retiring at the end of the school year, giving Konkle time to shadow him and learn the job before fully taking the reins next school year.
Among the administrative changes, Barbara Fuerbacher retired at the beginning of this year. Rather than fill the position, her duties have been split between Keith Millard, director of secondary programs, and Sandra Bussell, director of elementary programs.
Jim Boerke, director of operations and construction management, also retired. Some of his duties will be assumed by Konkle. Hamilton High School Principal Dennis Malone is also set to retire at the end of the school year. He will be replaced by Garfield Middle School Principal Doug Leist.
Baker is also working with building principals, new administrators and aspiring administrators on Ohio’s new model principal standards, an evaluation system required by the district’s participation in Race to the Top.
“Knowing and applying these standards is important because they outline the behaviors and attitudes of the most distinguished administrators,” Baker said.
