HAMILTON — Residents can find everything New Age at an old store location with a new name.
Jim and Sue Boggs have opened Maiden-Mother-Crone in the old location of the Little Novelty Shop, 343 S. B Street, Hamilton. Sue, who offered New Age discussion groups and merchandise in the middle room of the shop previously, has now taken over the entire store.
The shop includes the handmade jewelry, fountains and dream catchers from local artists as well as everything New Age religious practitioners need, such as chalices, crystals, herbs, custom blend oils, hand-dipped candles and besom brooms, which “are used to sweep away the negativity. We don’t fly on them,” Sue explained.
New Age is really on old religion rooted in nature that is associated with Paganism. Sue has been a practitioner since she was 13 years old and went with her grandmother to a tea leaf reader. Jim’s faith sprouted from a more dramatic experience.
When his heart disease led to a coma, he said he spoke with his dead Uncle Speedy who told him he needed to get his life together. He said he realized then “there is something after this (life).”
In addition to merchandise, Maiden-Mother-Crone also offers discussion groups, Taro card readings, massage therapy, psychic readings and other spiritual meditations by appointment. Sue said the shop recognizes the need for New Age followers to have a place to go to connect.
“They don’t burn us at the stake anymore, but you can have a hard time,” Sue explained. “I figured it’s time to come out of the broom closet and give people a safe place to come to.”
While opening a new shop in a down economy may worry some, Sue said it has been a longtime dream that culminated through several signs.
A month ago a friend and psychic medium said she had a dream that Sue was “holding the crescent moon.” Not knowing the message’s meaning, she was directed to a dream decipherer who said it symbolized new beginnings and success. The Boggses then came across a calendar indicating 2009 was the Year of the Bog Witch, very similar to their last name. Not long after that a friend called and asked Sue if she needed some money to start a new business.
“It all just fell into place,” she said.
Now the Boggses said they hope the shop will help others find their place in a religion that teaches “Harm none.”
