EDITOR’S NOTE: This story is part of an occasional series that focuses on Butler County children in search of a mentor.

ST CLAIR TWP. — There’s a telescope in the corner of Brianna Stewart’s bedroom, a yellowed Dodgers pennant on the wall, a beloved gift from her grandmother, and a science experiment kit in the closet.

The Ross Middle School student loves sports, science and math.

While hugging her dog Bear, who is the same age as Brianna — 12, she said she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

“I love animals and science,” she said. “But I am really a math person.”

That is when the 5-foot, 7-inch sixth-grader isn’t outside shooting hoops.

Sabrina Ceo signed up her youngest of four children several years ago to be part of the Big Brothers/Big sisters program. Brianna, who lives in the Sharon Park neighborhood just outside of Hamilton, is still waiting for a mentor.

“I have a handicapped child and I am back in forth to the hospital a lot,” Ceo said. As single parent she just does not have the time she would like to spend with Brianna.

“I wanted her to have someone just for her,” the mother said. “I think a Big Sister would be someone she could talk about things to. You know things that might come up that is bothering them.”

Brianna agreed.

“It would be nice to have someone to talk to or do things with who is like a big sister, not a mom,” she said with a laugh. “Nothing against Mom, but she’s Mom.”

Brianna said she loves to be outdoors and would like to spend time with her mentor playing basketball, bowling or going out to eat or a movie.
