WEST CHESTER — About 330 people attended the West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance 34th annual Dinner and Awards gala Friday, March 12.

The event recognized area business leaders that have made an impact in economic development, beautification, and aided nonprofit groups in the community.

Recipients of awards included: Carlos Todd Business Person of the Year Steve Behler of Kemba Credit Union, Larry Schumacher Beautification Award Small Business Dr. Foo Tran of West Chester Family Dentistry and Roth Citizen of the Year Karen Welch of Bajon Salon.

Welch’s salon was recognized for raising $20,000 for St. Baldricks Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research last year.

Welch and Lisa Bentley, assistant manager at the salon, said they were honored to be recognized for the fundraiser, which drew about 300 people last year.

Some shaved their heads to raise funds for the event.

“We didn’t think it would be anything. We were just hoping people would show up,” Bentley said, adding that the event will be held again at 6 p.m. June 25.

Behler of Kemba Credit Union said he too was proud to be recognized.

He thanked the chamber and family members for assisting him in the success of the area business that has been in the community for about four years.

“Partnering with the chamber helped us grow and help us get out and into the community,” Behler said.

Chamber Vice President Kathleen T. Rambo said she was pleased so many business and community leaders such as state representatives Courtney Combs and William Coley attended the event.

“I pleased with the crowd,” Rambo said. “I’m pleased that even with the economic downtown, people came out to support the community and the (chamber) members.”
