Fairfield will welcome back musician John Sebastian for a July 4 concert at the Jungle Jim’s Oscar Events Center.

The performer is famous for hits like “Do You Believe in Magic?” and “Welcome Back,” the theme for the TV series “Welcome Back, Kotter.”

The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce is a partner in the concert, which is sponsored by Mercy Hospital Fairfield.

“One initiative in Fairfield is to generate more activity on Route 4,” said Mercy spokesman Greg Ossmann. “We felt by holding the event at the Oscar Event Center that would help bring more people to Route 4.”

Sebastian was part of the Sojourner Recovery Series of concerts and performed to a sold out audience on May 29, 2008, at the Community Arts Center.

“We felt we’d give people another chance to see him, or people who have not seen him before an opportunity in really an interesting surrounding,” Ossmann said.

Fairfield Chamber President and CEO Kert Radel said it’s important Sebastian is coming to an Ohio 4 venue.

“I think it’s going to be an important event for the city to have this on Route 4,” Radel said. “It brings further emphasis to what’s happening on Route 4. It’s showing it’s a live and viable market place.”

Radel said the event is going to be a “special event” as part of the July 4 weekend.

The Sebastian concert follows the city’s July 3 Red, White & Kaboom Independence Day celebration at Harbin and Village Green parks. Fireworks are set to go off at 10 p.m. from Harbin Park.

On Monday, July 6, the annual Summer Music Games drum and bugle corps show, will be at Fairfield Stadium on Stadium Drive.

“It’s a great holiday weekend to have these components,” Radel said.

“People are talking about having a reason to stay at home – here’s a reason that you don’t have to drive hundreds of miles to get entertainment and get value.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert is set for 7 p.m. Tickets, which are $25, are available at the Fairfield Chamber, 670 Wessel Drive, or by calling (513) 881-5500. Tickets must be picked up by July 2. Any unsold tickets may be purchased at the door.

A portion of the proceeds from the concert will go to Play It Forward, a non-profit organization designed to help musicians in the Greater Cincinnati area who are facing financial hardships.
