MONROE — Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch of Monroe is urging residents to remember the animals, as well as people, who have been adversely affected by hard economic times during the upcoming holiday season.

The nonprofit group is sponsoring a food drive from Nov. 7-22 to assist the local food pantries, as well as the animal shelters and local rescue organizations. These groups are expecting an increase in requests for assistance. Catnip & Carrots is requesting donations of nonperishable and unopened human and pet foods, personal care items and new, unopened pet toys or supplies to assist these agencies dealing with an influx of abandoned animals, because their owners can no longer afford to keep them.

All donations collected will be passed on to local churches and the Shared Harvest Food Bank, along with the Animal Friends Humane Society, PAWS and Angel Animal Rescue, the organization said.

Susan Wise, the president of the group, recently took a delivery of nine, 55-gallon barrels from Shared Harvest Food Bank that will be distributed to several locations where local residents can drop off items in the community.

“If we could fill every barrel that would be wonderful, she said.

The drop off locations are: Monroe City Building (lobby), 233 S. Main St.; Monroe Lending Library, 231 Macready Ave.; Monroe Fire Station No. 2, 6262 Hamilton-Middletown Road; Monroe Family Pet Hospital, 3211 Heritage Green Drive; Kroger, 3033 Heritage Green Drive; The Red Onion Cafe, 261 S. Main St.; Coffee Beans & Brew, 294 N. Main St. and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 21 during Christmas on the Plaza in front of the City Building downtown.

Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cats and rabbits (and the occasional canine). They specialize in animal welfare, spay/neuter/microchip education and referrals, lost and found services and on occasion, as funds allow, they offer veterinary assistance to at-risk pets of low income senior or disabled families, according to the group’s Web site at www.catnip
