TRENTON — The walls went up Saturday, June 6, at Trenton’s first Habitat for Humanity home, paving the way for the family of Dave Young and Rachel Moore to move in this fall.

The location of the house, 111 Third St., is chosen by the family, said Gene Snow, director of the local Habitat chapter. Although Young and Moore live in Middletown now, Young chose Trenton because members of his family lived there.

Moore, Young’s girlfriend, said the Habitat process began about a year ago when Young’s uncle, who worked on a house in Carlisle, advised the couple to go on the waiting list.

It was a good thing, too, because the landlord of the property where they had been living decided to sell, so Young, Moore and their daughter, Cadence Young, 3, settled in with Young’s mother.

While the family is excited about the two-story, three-bedroom house, earning it will be no easy thing. The family is required to put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” in community service, such as volunteering at the Salvation Army, Young said.

“It’s exciting, but it’s nerve-wracking at the same time,” Moore said. “I’m pregnant and due in July, so my uncle has been subbing for my hours.”

The family hopes to move in October.

Trenton City Councilman Ray Nichols has worked at the site, where volunteers installed the footers and the foundation.

“It’s going great. If this was the first one in Trenton, I didn’t want to miss it. You can learn a lot from these guys (at Habitat),” Nichols said.

Trenton Mayor Rhonda Freeze said, “It’s an outstanding program ... to see the work in action has given me a new appreciation of the program and the volunteers who give so generously of their time.”
