FAIRFIELD — Mercy Hospital Fairfield is the only hospital in the Cincinnati region to be ranked in the top 50 for cardiovascular care.

Thomson Reuters released the rankings of the top 50 hospitals in the U.S. for cardio care today. In addition to attaining the top 50 of more than 1,000 hospitals, the Fairfield hospital also came in the top 10 of community hospitals in the U.S., according to its parent health system, Mercy Health Partners.

This is the first year Thompson Reuters, a New York information analysis company, named the top 50 instead of top 100 heart care hospitals. Mercy Hospital Fairfield was named in the top 100 for 2008.

“Cost, quality equals value and we deliver that here,” said Thomas Urban, president and chief executive officer of Mercy Hospital Fairfield, at a celebration Monday.

The annual study is now in its 12th year. More than 1,000 hospitals were analyzed and the top hospitals were shown to have better patient outcomes in the categories of survival rates, complications indices, patients readmitted to the hospital in the 30 days following discharge, length of hospital visits and costs. Top hospitals discharge heart patients a half day earlier and spend $1,300 less per case than non-winners, according to Thomson Reuters.

Hospital administration and medical personnel gathered in the lobby Monday for a pomegranate juice toast to the news. Dr. William Cook said the Fairfield hospital was able to move up the list through teamwork.

“It’s the collaboration between the physicians that makes it work very well,” said Cook, director of cardiovascular surgery.

The other Southwest Ohio hospital to make the list was Kettering Medical Center of Dayton, that is part of Kettering Health Network. Kettering Health also owns The Fort Hamilton Hospital.
