FAIRFIELD — Dr. Greg Hall was looking for a Valentine’s Day card for his wife and kids when Mercy Hospital Fairfield’s medical director told him he was named the 2009 Physician Employee of the Year.

“Everyone here, physicians and nurses alike, are basically here to help people, otherwise we wouldn’t work nights, weekends and holidays away from our families,” Hall said.

Hall, a West Chester Twp. resident in his mid-30s, is the assistant medical director for Mercy Hospital Fairfield’s emergency department and is contracted through the Dayton-based physician services organization. He’s also the assistant director of risk management with Premier Health Care Services, which provides emergency medicine management and staffing to more than 50 facilities in seven states.

Hall was nominated by Dr. James Horn, medical director for Mercy Fairfield’s emergency department, who actually told him he won a few days before he got notified from Premier. Hall has been with Premier since 2003 and worked at Mercy Fairfield since 2004.

“It’s a great honor, a nice plaque to put on my wall at home, but it reaffirms what we’re doing in terms of our primary goal, which is taking care of patients,” said the University of Cincinnati medical school graduate.

The physician employee of the year is awarded annually to a person who “demonstrates the highest professional ability and contribution to the Premier organization.” According to a release, Premier officials noted Hall’s “role in delivering high quality care, working hard, and going that ‘extra mile.’”

Hall was honored about a year ago by the Mercy Fairfield nurses with four other doctors with a similar honor. Hall spends about 75 to 80 percent of his time at Mercy seeing patients, and most of the remainder of his time is spent on administrative work.

Mercy Hospital Fairfield spokesman Greg Ossmann said having the right people in the emergency room is “crucial.”

“It’s when people are often at their most stressed, and you have to care for their condition but you have to care for them as people,” Ossmann said.

The emergency department treated more than 60,000 patients in 2009.
