She took one step too many.

After an uneventful morning of deer hunting, lunch and then more hunting, Dan Corbett stepped down out of his tree stand and walked to a nearby field.

That’s when he spotted a doe walking toward him.

“She stomped her foot like she didn’t want me there,” Corbett said.

Corbett, 37, of Trenton, shot the doe on a Ross Twp. farm on Monday, Nov. 30 — the opening day of gun deer hunting season in Ohio — then dragged the 140-pound deer nearly one mile through the woods to his truck.

“I was soaking wet,” he said.

Wet and happy. Corbett and his father, Dan Corbett, 58, an AK Steel retiree, have been hunting for more than 20 years. He treasures their time together, time spent alone in field, without the hassles of everyday life.

“It’s nice to be able to talk to him,” said Corbett, who followed his father’s footsteps at AK Steel. “It’s good to get out with him.”

Wildlife officer Scott Phillips, who works out of Spring Valley, said the cool, dry conditions were “perfect weather” for hunting deer.

Weather — and luck — were on the side of Mike Colvin, of Carlisle, and his uncle, Jim Colvin, of Miamisburg.

Mike Colvin, 33, bagged an eight-point buck, while his uncle killed a doe. The deer were killed on a family farm in Clinton County.

Mike Colvin killed his buck with a muzzle loader, he said.

“My heart was pumping real fast,” he said.

Gun season continues through Sunday, Dec. 6, then returns for two days, Dec. 19-20.
