HAMILTON —It’s not every day that kids get to make paper braids that are taller than they are, but that’s just what they did last week at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts.
The kids were in a workshop to help create the upcoming exhibit “Undercurrents,” made out of various kinds of recycled material. The exhibit, which will open Sept. 23, will fill many floors of the Fitton Center, with various kinds of materials contributed by members of the community over the next month.
About a dozen members of the Boys and Girls Club of East Avenue were working on the project last week, doing everything from twisting the paper braids to creating paper cut-outs that will be interspersed throughout the exhibit. The kids were aged 10 to 14.
Artist Jennifer Van Winkle, who is creating the exhibit, told the kids, “Make a bit of room to make things that inspire you.”
James Jacobs of Hamilton said, “I like folding things and stuff” as he cuts slits into a piece of paper — and then decided to make a hat out of it, placing it on his head and wearing it throughout the session.
Susan Cavalaris, a local artist, who was helping the kids with the project, told them, “It’s like opening up a present. You don’t know what you’re going to get.”
Tieraney Moreland of Hamilton said of the workshop, “I think it’s great, I love it. It gives me more social time to get along with friends.”
Her cousin, Andrea Johnson of Hamilton, said, “It’s really fun. I like coming here and making fake creatures.”
Van Winkle has even picked up a few tips from the kids, saying, “It’s really moving along. I’m learning different techniques I didn’t think about.”
Workshops wrap up today. There will be a family workshop 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. All workshops are free. Call (513) 863-8873 for more information,
