CINCINNATI — The superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is stepping down to become assistant chief for the U.S. province of the Society of Mary, the archdiocese announced Friday, Nov. 13.
Brother Joe Kamis, superintendent since 2002, will leave early next year for his new post in St. Louis.
“Brother Joe Kamis has served the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and its schools generously and well for the past seven years,” Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk said in a news release. “The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has always been conspicuously strong in its schools, and Brother Joe has helped to maintain that level of excellence.”
Pilarczyk said a search committee will be formed to identify a successor “in due time.”
Kamis, 62, called his work here “a blessed one.”
“The ministry of Catholic education is a gift to the church and I have been so delighted to work with our principals and other leaders in this city for the good of the children,” he said.
A Cleveland native, Kamis holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Dayton and a master’s in educational administration and supervision from John Carroll University in Cleveland. He’s held numerous leadership positions over the years, including in 1993 and 1994 in Dayton, when he directed the Bergamo Center.
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is the 26th largest Catholic diocese in the country, with almost 500,000 Catholics, and has the eighth largest network of Catholic schools in terms of enrollment. The 19-county territory includes 218 parishes and 113 Catholic primary and secondary schools.
