HAMILTON — The Open Door Pantry isn’t just about giving people free food. It also wants to help them make healthy choices about food, said board member Pat Irwin, a local nurse who is organizing the annual Care Fair.
“Our focus is on prevention, nutrition and education,” Irwin said. “The pantry isn’t just about food. Our goal is to help people make healthy choices, so if they come in to get 10 items from the pantry, eight of them won’t be canned spaghetti.”
Irwin said there are 33 vendors from area social service agencies and health care providers who will offer health screenings and information on many topics.
“The Veterans Administration will bring its mobile health unit to help any vet sign up for health care services,” Irwin said.
Nutritionists from Fort Hamilton and Mercy hospitals will offer advice on making better food choices.
Nursing students from Miami University Hamilton, one of the fair’s primary sponsors, will have information to help children understand good health.
Irwin said there will be a tent for children’s activities. It will include clowns, balloons, a horse from the Hamilton Police Department and an appearance by ventriloquist Megan Piphus, a recent graduate of Princeton High School.
The fair, which also is a project of the local Ohio State University Extension Office, the Booker T. Washington Community Center and the Shared Harvest Food Bank — will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 12.
