After retiring from a career as a teacher in the New Miami Local School District, Eleanor Carbary joined the school board as a replacement for long-time board member Bill Balsinger, who moved out of the district seven years ago.
“It was a hard job to fill those shoes,” she said, “but I loved going back to the schools and seeing how much positive energy there is in our district.”
The three main issues facing New Miami Schools she said are, “Money, money and money.”
“No matter what other problems we’ve had, it always comes back to financial issues.”
So the board and the administration have had to be “super-creative” in finding ways not only to keep the schools operational, but competitive in this technology-charged world. She cites a recent $700,000 STEM grant that allowed the district to purchase computers and related equipment and provide training for its teachers as an example.
“This grant has allowed us to teach our kids the kinds of skills that the economy is demanding,” Carbary said.
“We’re always looking for ways to bring money in, and we’ve been very successful at it,” she said.
She said the district has also sought safety grants that allowed them to add a security system to the school building and grants that allow children to have access to fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day.
