WEST CHESTER TWP. — Some lock up the things they love, out of fear they’ll be lost, stolen or damaged. But for West Chester Twp. resident Denny Perry, he knows exactly where he wants his most loved possessions — out on the road, with himself behind the wheel.
“When I was five years old, I was playing with cars. I have been ever since, and I’m 71 years old,” Perry said.
Perry is the proud owner of three antique cars — a 1931 Model A four-door Town Select Ford, a 1929 Ford Express Wagon and a 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck. While he loves them all, his favorite is the Model A Ford.
“I’ve had it for 25 years, and it’s just a nice drivin’ old car,” he said.
Perry, who said he just enjoys driving his cars, said he’s only won one award for any of his antique cars, and that was for his favorite Ford.
“At Wittenhouse (senior living community), they voted my car the best in show. That’s the only trophy I ever got,” he said.
Perry said he’ll drive the cars in parades, weddings and to a Model A Ford club in Cincinnati. He said he drives the pickup truck most regularly, as the Model A Ford and wagon both have historic license plates, meaning they aren’t used for general transportation. But two weeks ago, Perry was put in a situation where he had to — like it or not — drive his Model A Ford.
“We drove the Model A to church because the garage door wouldn’t come up. We couldn’t get the modern cars out,” he said.
The truck was Perry’s last purchase about eight years ago, he said. But, it may be time to add to his collection.
“If someone finds a 1941 coupe, I’m looking,” he joked. “But I might have to divorce my wife to get it. She said I have enough cars. Or maybe she’ll just divorce me.”
