MIDDLETOWN — Miami University’s regional campuses are hosting a number of events to celebrate Black History Month in February.
All of the events — which focus on African-American history and culture — are open to the public and many are free at Miami’s Hamilton and Middletown campuses.
“We’re excited,” said Katina Chandler, a senior program assistant in the office of multicultural services. “We have a growing diversity, and here at Miami, we have a lot of African students as well. We like to inform the community about how we can better get along within the communities, and in doing so, it helps us in our retention on all campuses.”
The 19th annual African-American Read-In on Feb. 6 kicks off the series of scheduled events. From 12:30-2 p.m. that day in the Multicultural Resource Center at MUH (room 114 Rentschler Hall), a variety of literature representing the African-American experience will be shared.
The MUH library will provide a cart full of books for faculty, students and the community, and those who are interested in reading publicly can do so for three minutes.
The other events are:
Taste of Soul Food Luncheon: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 9, MUM’s campus community center, $5.
Racial Legacies & Learning XXVII Lecture, Dr. Juan E. Gilbert: Gilbert, 42, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at MUH’s Harry T. Wilks Conference and at noon, Feb. 15, at MUM’s campus community center.
Gilbert, who is Chandler’s older brother, is a Hamilton native, Miami University graduate and winner of the 2011 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. He is a professor at Clemson University.
A Taste of Soul: Exploring Caribbean Islands: 7 p.m., Feb. 18, MUH’s Harry T. Wilks Conference Center. Tickets are $10 per person or $7 for seniors and children under 12. Mahogany’s CafĂ© and Grill will cater the event, and vendors featuring Caribbean merchandise and crafts will begin selling at 5 p.m.
“Each of these is another way to show our cultural diversity,” Chandler said. “Our numbers are growing, and the more information we can give to our students and our community, the more they can learn from each other.”
