Woman alleges head injury after riding the coaster

I have to agree with the people that are saying...COME ON!! KI is not the cause of this ladies problem..everyone knows that WOODEN COASTERS ARE ROUGH!! If you don't want a headache, don't ride them. DUH!!!!

The Son of Beast is a disgrace to the good name of The Beast (best coaster ever built) and Kings Island. I have always thought so. It was jerky when it first came out, and I immediately wondered about the integrity of the loop. Although it's jerky like its father, it was uncomfortably so and more importantly it's just not very fun compared to the other great rides at the park. I say tear it down, and build it back even better. Everyone loves a good comeback!

I was at Kings Island July 14,2009, my husband and I was eating and then we were going to get on The Beast. While we were eating we saw the ambulance go through the park. After we ate we walked around the corner to The Beast and they were loading a girl on the backboard in a hurry, with full percautions. As an EMT myself and the little I observed either there were three new EMT'S who have not seen much in thier career or they were concerned, definately in a hurry. They closed The Beast after.

I am disgusted by the fact that most of you only care about getting to ride the SOB again and not how this poor woman is doing. As a nurse, it's hard to say what her cognitive status was. A rupturing of a blood vessel in your brain could have stroke-like symptoms. My sternum (chest bone)was fractured in the 7/9/06 accident on SOB and I now have a titanium plate w/ 8 screws in my chest, plus still have pain issues on a daily basis. This could be something she deals with for the rest of her life.

I guess what doesn't make sense is you can bust a blood vessel by crying how do they know its the ride that did it. Stop trying to sue kings island your gonna lose

I dont like to ride it but I think going to KI gives everyone a headache and thats one big reason people go. It's fun and everyone enjoys to watch their lives at stake. The son of beast is there to show you that if you are willing to risk it, it'll take it all. Yes it hurts but to complain and go to the hospital for it. COME ON!

I think that they could have just fixed the problem
with the loop instead of geting rid of it. Im just
glad to have road it before they got rid of it.

p.s The stupid women does not know if she busted her
blood vessel on the ride anyway. Because when you bust a blood vessel the affect does not take action
until a couple of hours, and the ride is only two
minutes and thirty seconds.

that is ridiculous! i think that lady should have said something sooner. how do they know that she bursted a blood vessel in her brain from that ride it could have been something else. that ride has been there for ages and i dont think there is any reason they should shut it down now!

Did the woman even tell the hospital staff that she had been at King's Island? Maybe her doctor is the incompetent one in this case. I have a bad back from playing macho man and picking up heavy stuff. I myself thought I was going to die from the beating I got from the SOB, not to mention it didn't help my back any. But I know I won't hesitate to get back on it again. As far as the ones saying they wont ride it again, thats a shorter line for the rest of us that aren't afraid to ride it!!!!!!!!

the lady who got hurt is a personal friend of mine she was in the hospital for 10 days due to the accident, she couldn't report it. Also it was probably her insurance who contacted the park, they are not that type of people.

Son of Beast has had numerous problems with people suffering head, neck and back injuries. It's only a matter of time before it happens again when it gets re-opened. If I were Cedar Fair, I'd tear it down and hold the world's largest bonfire.

she prolly just wants money...y else would she have waited to so long to report the injury...n to the person who will never take your kids there that is just lame...kids island has the best atmosphere for kids...who cares if someone got hurt accidents do happen...n who cares if is not an island

I rode the roller coaster back when it had a loop and never road it again. I had such a bad headache immediately afterwards and took Motrin. I'm not surprised to hear about injuries caused by the ride. Wooden coasters are bumpy, and that ride was painful.

3:16 PM, 6/24/2009
How can it be the parks fault the lady had a blood vessel burst? Thousands of people ride the ride and one unrelated injury shuts it down????

You ride the ride, you take the risk.

The lady and her lawyers want some money, plain and simple.

WE WENT TO KI FOR THE DAY YESTERDAY AND WAS WISHING THE RIDE WAS OPEN.... DIAMONDBACK WAS THE CURE FOR IT..... BETTER THAN THE BEAST AND I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD EVER SAY THAT. THE SON OF BEAST IS A VERY BUMPY RIDE BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WHEN GOING TO AN AMUSEMENT PARK AND RIDING A WOODEN ROLLER COASTER!

It would be prudent to go ahead and shut down the entire park asap. I know I will never take my kids there, its not even an island to begin with.

She did not have to have a pre-existing condition for her to have a bleed. I took care of a patient who only fell out of a wagon and ended up having a severe brain bleed that required immediate surgery. Was found to have no pre-existing conditions. So, it could happen from riding SOB.

Reading the article, the woman is not looking for attention or a cash payout. I hate seeing these attacks because people have to be able to 'report' happenings without it being a backlash on them.

I hope she is doing all right , and that they do a thorough review. It may be that there is no problem with the ride beyound the normal bumps and rough rides - but it doesn't hurt to be sure.

Perhaps it was the big, greasy (and expensive) Italian sausage hoagie with sauteed peppers and onions that caused her injury.

12:26 PM, 6/24/2009
Read the signs prior to riding the ride. It states that the SOB is a rough ride and if you have ANY medical conditions, you should not ride! Maybe she had an undiagnosed brain aneurysm which burst due to the ride, but to sue KI and close the ride is ridiculous!
MV
12:09 PM, 6/24/2009
have never been there...and have no plans on going...the money people pay...to have their brains shaken like scrambled eggs is ludicrous at best...find a trampoline to jump on or ride up and down in an elevator.....its safer and less costly...
nyc
11:25 AM, 6/24/2009
She may also have an undiagnosed medical condition which caused the blood vessel to rupture. I hope she sees a specialist to make sure she doesn't have any aneurisms ready to rupture.

11:23 AM, 6/24/2009
The lady had no intention of suing anyone and only reported it 2 weeks later when someone asked if she had reported it. She didn't expect SOB to be closed or any other attention or $$$$$. She went to the emergency room THAT night. (was not told it was a pulled muscle DH) She felt ill right after the ride.
She is not a scab doing this for money. She is a decent person and all of you with derogatory comments obviously don't know her.

That is an extremely rough coaster. But it's a wooden coaster!! You will be in for a vicious ride. So I say don't get on it if you know you can't handle it!! Myself I have rode it several times and loved every minute. From a coaster lover.

The article said the women had to go to intensive care. Maybe she was hospitalized for a week or more. Having been in the hospital for a head injury, I know that the doctors and nurses want you to be resting as much as possible, not calling king's island on the phone. If she was intensive care, even for only a day, her hospital stay was at least a week. Just saying it makes sense that she didn't come forward right away.
Come On
11:11 AM, 6/24/2009
I don't ride any of the rides anymore. I may go there once a year, and ride one or two rides, if any at all. This is because their headrests are so hard that it doesn't cushion the pounding one can get. Sure one can hold their head back however the cars go so fast that the vibration just throws your head around.
Scott
11:08 AM, 6/24/2009
Scott, you obviously don't know much about liability law. In order for KI to be responsible, there does NOT have to be clear case of neglect. If their rides are hurting people, they're responsible.
LJ
11:08 AM, 6/24/2009
No one "forces" you to go on any of this kind of ride. You should use your own judgement when deciding to go on them in the first place. Kings Island in no way should be held responsible or liable UNLESS there is a clear case of neglect. Each of these rides is more than likely inspected daily & were engineered for the utmost in safety first & foremost. So quit your whining - you know there is an inherent risk to ride them in the first place.
Scott
10:49 AM, 6/24/2009
I have read all of these comments, and I'm here to tell you that I can understand it taking her 2 weeks to report an injury. My question is how many people have NEVER claimed their injury,,,thinking it would go away? I rode it the first summer it was open, It hurt my neck so bad that I couldn't ride anything else all day and have never been to the park since! We used to go 3-4 times a year. To this day I still have problems with my neck. I never reported it. I say TEAR IT DOWN!!!

I will ride anything and everything, but after riding the Son of Beast in May (and yes I had ridden it in the past), I told my son that was the last time I'd ride it. I felt like my brain got battered against my skull. Another man sitting in front of me was holding his head too. Hey, if thats your thing...go for it. But I have no doubt that ride could hurt someone.

11:05 PM, 6/23/2009
It sounds like she had a pre-existing condition, in which case she shouldn't have been on the ride anyway. She may not have known about the condition, but it doesn't sound like the park is at fault at all.
Michelle
7:10 PM, 6/23/2009
Chances are she rode more than just the SOB, how can she pin point that it was SOB that did it. Or maybe she had an undiscovered medical condition and it wasnt the ride at all. Still yet she will win her case in court and get tons of money. Then she will apply for SSI because she cant work anymore and she will be set for the rest of her life. BUM!!!!!!!

I have read all the articles and posts about this story. The main concern I feel is for the pain and agony this woman is suffering.
But a delay this long to verify the cause of the injury, to me it sounds like a Mc Donalds cup of coffee or a very good lawyer who will take the case for something that can happen to us all just sitting here at the computer. We are not immune from the same illness.

12:32 PM, 6/23/2009
She reported the incident 3 weeks later... maybe she was waiting to see her doctor? It will be more like 6 months to see a doctor if Barry gets his way. Just saying...

How about giving KI some props for shutting SOB down upon hearing about this women's injury? I think they did the right thing by shutting it down and get the ride checked out again.

People need to heed the warning signs before riding. However, back when it was under construction, a section of the structure for the first hill collapsed killing several workers. It is also a fact that there are engineering design flaws. They thought that by removing the loop, it would fix the problem. Well, it didn't. They need to make the necessary structural modifications needed and hopefully they can reinstall the loop.

That poor little roller coaster's been cursed/jinxed since it was built. Lightning strikes, design flaws ... *shrugs* but I've been on it a few times and never had any problem. People don't understand he's not meant to be easy ... he's a hardcore little coaster for the jaded. To use yet another car analogy, he's not meant to be a cushy Lexus, he's meant to be a sports car built for speed and thrill ... some people can handle him, some people can't.

I have been beaten up by SOB before. But I actually rode the back seat of the Beast and it was worse than SOB. Its simple if you don't like the hell beat out of you, stay off the ride or ride in the middle of the train. The middle is always the smoothest. That day after the Beast killed me I rode SOB in the middle train and had no problems at all.

I think that ride is horrible. My husband and I rode it last year and thought a visit to the chiropractor might have been in order after we got off. Very bumpy to the point of being very uncomfortable. We are in our 20s too its not like we are old. We hate that ride and will never ride it again.

9:39 AM, 6/23/2009
What is this world coming to? Seriously. ONE person CLAIMS head injuries on the ride and waits THREEE WEEKS to report it so they shut the ride down completely? Maybe if she came off the ride complaining and insist they call an ambulance I could understand the closure, but to wait three weeks and then come forward?!?! How many people since then have ridden the ride with no problems? Thousands, I'm sure. If one out of thousands has a problem, maybe the problem is that one.

i was raised in ohio and spent most of my summers at kings island!! i now live in florida with an annual pass to busch gardens. they have 1 wooden coaster. "the gwazi". this ride will literally beat you to death. that is the fun of it. if you cant handle it then you should not ride it!!! the coaster is placed at the park entrance and exit. YOU CAN RIDE IT FIRST OR LAST!!!. your choice. you will come off the ride with a headache. AND YOU ARE WARNED BEFORE ENTERING THE RIDE!!!!

Okay, It might be a little sad that the son of the beast is going to be closed, and some people haven't even have got to ride it! I mean, if someone else gets hurt, I say keep it open, the person with the injury will recover! But if not, I think it is in proper order to close it.
Joey
9:03 AM, 6/23/2009
Part of riding wooden coasters are the bumps. Kings Island has always had signs posted about the risks of riding coasters. If people would read them and then take in consideration on if this is the right or wrong coaster for them, perhaps there wouldn't be as many injuries. Sometimes I think people just dream up injuries for a lawsuit. Grant you some injuries are real just not all of them.

Well duh...Its a really ruff ride because its wooden...When you first see it of course you will know its ruff...It really is.I dont get how she just told us this how she got an injury by riding it last month. How come she didnt tell Kings Island on May 31 when she rode it???

I was hurt after riding sob in 2006. The same day the other's were injured much worse than me. I haven't ridden it since but only because it's closed everytime I want to ride it. I will only ride it again now because they took the loop out. I think there was a flaw in the loop but other than that, wooden coasters are supposed to be bumpy. That's what I like about them. I'm sad the racers don't go backwards anymore.

8:47 AM, 6/23/2009
i have rode the sob lots of times and i have to say that when you get on a wooden coaster you should expect it to be a bumpy ride, especially if you have rode it before, and they did make a good point why did it take so long to report the injury, sounds like to me like some1 is trying to make some quick cash...
Jason
8:28 AM, 6/23/2009
This looks extremely fishy. I've ridden the Son of Beast many times. And as with all wooden coasters its bumpy and throws you around like crazy. There are even signs posted that the ride will do this. Also the fact that she waits 2 weeks to even complain, you think as soon as she got off the ride she would have said something had it been something substantial. I wouldn't be surprised if this ride is replaced due to all of the problems they have been having on it.

I am a King's Island Ride Warrior! If I ride the SOB, I take 3 Asprin whne I get in line, and ride Viking Fury when done. No problems. Why do whiny people have to screw up the better rides for those of us who want to ride them? If you can't handle the big coasters, I hear there lots of kiddy rides in the Nickelodeon section!

"thrill seeker", I am extremely healthy, below average weight and height and I will never ride the SOB again. I love roller coasters and have experienced the bumps and shakes of The Beast for over 30 years. The SOB takes it a little too far. I go to have a good time, not walk away with a slipped disc & strained neck. I do expect to get shook around a bit so when I got bruised a little when riding I chalked it up as my own fault but would never pursue legal action. Just won't ride it again.

My brother and I rode it the summer it opened, with the loop. I thought that I was going to get a brain stem injury, like shaken baby syndrome. That is just a badly designed coaster.

I have ridden the SOB several times, and yes, every time I get off it I ask myself, Why did I do that again?.. for the thrill!! Yes it does beat the hell out of you, and I once had to go to the beer garden and lay down on a table to recover.. but I went again.. If you don't like it, don't go on it!

I love roller coasters, but the SOB is one I won't ride anymore. It is way to jerky and you feel like the car will jump the track at any moment. Its amazing that with the age of the Beast it is still one smooth ride. It's son - no where near it.

All you wimpy people just stay off the ride. If half of you people are so freakin delicate just stay home. It's roller coaster 101 people. It's SUPPOSED to whip you around and go fast. I'm disappointed in all the whiny whimps. Why do you go to KI in the first place?
Son of Beast ROCKS
6:47 AM, 6/23/2009
I have rode this ride a couple of times and have since swore off the ride because after I get off the ride I always feel like I have whip lash, my neck and back always hurt. I also get this feeling on the beast too. I personally don't like going to KI because their rides are not made for people who have thicker hips and thighs. this makes it very uncomfortable to ride the rides.

I rode Son of Beast the first season it was open. It was very painful to ride and my friend and I came out with several bruises. We expressed our displeasure to park security, who took us to park management. Management was very upset to hear about our injuries and comped us some items. It won't be long before this coaster goes the way of Skylab.

i love kings island and cedar point. both have their likes and dislikes. kings island is more of an old fasion type place. theyre bringing new things in but they have old ones also. poeple who want to ride them should know that these are old, and should expect to see some jumping and bumping on the coaster. when i went on it about 2 weeks ago i didnt get hurt, it was her fault for not taking the caution that one shouldve taken

I wouldn't miss Son of Beast if it went away for good. I rode it one time the year it opened and my neck hurt the rest of the day. Never again! I like King's Island, but Cedar Point's coasters are so much smoother. Maybe now that the same company owns them, KI will improve.

10:38 PM, 6/22/2009
If these were death traps then why would anyone agree to work on something. I too know someone who has built some of their coasters at Kings Island. He takes great pride in working on them! These people who get hurt on the rides are usually the ones at fault. In the past there have been rides that people have gotten hurt on and it had nothing to do with the ride it was the rider. If these were "death traps" then they would not be made at all!
J
10:34 PM, 6/22/2009
Death traps? Really, Meshell?
How many coasters are in this country? How many rides does each do a day? How many people have died on rollercoasters?

Death traps. That, like the spelling of your name, is just ridiculous.
Stop the idiocy

My friend and I rode this crazy coaster before they took the loop out and it was AWESOME! I will say that we both looked at each other afterwards and felt a sense of relief that we made it off alive! In MY opinion...THE BEAST is the craziest ride there. Seems to get more wobbly and faster every time I ride...BUT SOOO MUCH FUN! If you don't like it...don't ride!!! Simple as that!!!

It wasn't that they replaced the cars.. During the 2006/2007 off season one car from each train was removed, thus shortening them from six to five cars per train. The lighter trains couldn't make it through the loop, and that is why they removed the loop. (The loop was NOT the cause of the promblems in 2006) The lighter trains were supposed to keep the problems from reoccuring....

Lary- The department of agriculture started inspecting rides at fairs and carnivals years ago. It evolved into inspecting stationary rides at amusement parks as well. They usually only inspect these rides after complaints or injuries. The parks have full time staff that inspect and maintain the rides reporting to the department of agriculture,

The roughness of this roller coaster is not normal. I rode it some time after it opened and swore I would never ride it again. At one point, the car jerked and hit the track so hard that a sharp pain shot up my back, taking my breath away. I could barely move and ended up going to the doctor not too long after. Last October, I gave it another shot, as I'd hear that the cars had been replaced with the "correct" ones. Boy, was that a rumor! The ride was as rough as last time.

Life = risk. This is fact. Divide the number of total riders in the history of this coaster by the number actually injured if you want a true risk assessment. You're far more likely to be injured driving your car to KI. Oh, but you DON'T want to hear the truth, do you??? No, of COURSE not. Why let FACTS get in the way? After all, your fine government doesn't!

Sounds like someone is trying to capitalize on this rides already shaky reputation. Its sad but I predicted after 2006 that this ride will eventually be removed, looks like its heading that way...

I love riding roller coasters. I know that wooden roller coasters are jerky. The Son of Beast is the worst ride at KI. I rode Son of Beast when it first opened and after I got off I swore I would never ride it again. I can see somebody getting hurt but would it take 2 weeks to come forward about it? I was banged up and bruised after my ride. I guess I should have sued.

Thank God they shut that thing down. I rode it for the first and only time in 2000 right after it opened and had a huge welt on the outside of my leg and could barely walk the rest of the day in the park

I have rode the son of beast several times...yes, it is jerky...but so is the beast.
Read the signs before you ride...and then quit whinning!!!
Sounds like a load of nonsense to me!!!!!
Nonsense....

Seriously - if it took two weeks to figure out you had a head injury, I'm thinking maybe you have bigger problems.

OK...this is ridiculous...it shouldn't take someone 2 wks to report a head injury! Sounds like a bogus lawsuit in the making. I am sure some nut job attorney will be all over this with $$ signs in his eyes!!
Kudos though to KI for looking to see if there really is a problem.
Funny how she is the only one that has reported anything *rolls eyes*

Two weeks to see a doctor about a head injury? I didn't know the government health care plan was already in effect....

OK. Short of her head getting KNOCKED OFF how do you obtain a head injury on a roller coaster?

Are you kidding me? 17 days? Was she in a coma?

I rode this ride when i was 3 months pregnant (did not know at the time). And I ended up having a full term healthy pregnancy, so really it cant be that bad, its just people tryin to get some money. And really how did they get a head injury? There is nothing to hit your head on.

If she was seriously injured, she would have know within seconds up to a day or two after the 'alleged' incident.

If she is not seeking monetary damages, I write this off as a woman will good intentions, although maybe not popular intentions.

If she is seeking monetary damages, then we all know this report is bogus.

First and foremost, let me state that i love roller coasters... this one does jerk you around... and Dave (and anyone else) i'm sorry you got injured... the thing I don't understand, is why on earth this woman waited 17 days to report this incident? Makes me question the whole thing...

I love this ride. It does jerk you around, and you have to know that. If you don't want to be jerked around...don't ride it. It's the best ride at the park, and until it reopens, I won't visit!

If you all think about wooden coasters they are all jerky. And riding them is the risk you take. Usually when someone gets hurt there is more to the story that no one knows about.

i was injured on it. the ride will jerk you something fierce. I'm kinda tall and the safety bar beat the crap out of my upper legs so bad i thought i had fractures, the bruising was probably the worst i ever had, it looked like someone hit me with a baseball bat. It was like a 60 second car wreck! I couldn't ride anything else after that and had to leave. please burn it down!

My fiance and our friends went to KI about 2 weeks ago, and all of the other coasters were fine and didn't bother us. But the moment we all stepped off the Son of Beast we were complaining about our necks and back. I hate that coaster. After we rode it, we decided to leave since it was one of the last ones we rode because we couldn't take anything else.

Remember Lary, people did get hurt on this ride before I believe. I never was a huge fan of the Son of Beast because of how jerky it is. The last time I rode it, one of my organs definitely was hurting afterwards! I'm just happy it isn't Diamondback that is closed. I really want to ride that one!
P.S. Derf, I'd be pretty ****** if several rides were closed when I was there. I hope that doesn't happen!

My husband and I have season passes too, and we have also noticed that every year the rides get rougher and jerkier. We are talking about not buying a pass next year since they are barely even fun anymore!

What does roller coasters have to do with agriculture? Shouldn't there be a safety dept for amusement rides and in other areas of safety which is needed such as public swimming, parks with play equipment, etc? Glad the ride was shut down before anyone got hurt !

I think it was a FANTSTIC idea to shut down the ride because if it was not shut down it could lead to SERIOUS injuries or even DEATH.

P.S. I have never even been to Kings Island before. It seems too dangerous, you are taking so many risks for nothing.
