WAYNE TWP. — Fire officials are still investigating the cause of a Saturday fire which destroyed the farmhouse at Bartels Farm on Cotton Run Road.
Around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, crews responded to reports of a house on fire in the 4000 block of Cotton Run Road, dispatchers said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials believe the fire started in a utility room where an electric heater was being used, said Edward Truster, Wayne Twp. assistant fire chief.
The two residents and two family pets - a dog and cat - were able to get out of the house without injury.
Bartels Farm is a 124-acre farm producing corn, soybeans, wheat and Christmas trees, according to the Ohio Farm Bureau Federations.
The home was built in 1900, according to the Butler County auditor’s website. The building is valued at just more than $99,000, according to the website.
Truster said that low temperatures and icy weather caused problems for the responding fire crews. He said after initially extinguishing the blaze, additional crews responded in the evening to tend to hot spots.
